Urgent care dentistry or emergency dental care is on the rise. When a patient is in pain or has a broken tooth, it is vital that their tooth is treated within a short period of time. Because of this urgency, Bright Side Dental includes same-day emergency dental care at each of their three office in Canton, Sterling Heights and Livonia.
Emergency dentistry is a commonplace necessity the world over. Tooth pain is most often caused by disregarded decay or an inflamed or infected root canal. Other common causes are a fractured tooth, broken or knocked out teeth, gum inflammation or even a swollen jaw, which most often indicates infection or disease.
It appears that one result of the recession – people postponing needed dental work to save money – has seen an increase in the need for emergency dentistry. According to a survey conducted by Jim Du Molin, of Tiburon, CA, almost two-thirds of dentists surveyed said they had an increase in emergency calls.
The survey specifically found that sixty-three percent of the dentists surveyed said that they had seen an increase in emergency treatment, thirty-one percent reported that they had not noticed any change. There were a few, six percent, who said that calls for emergency care had recently decreased.
Bright Side Dental was founded by two dentists, Dr. Abraham Gershonowicz and Dr. James Neme. They wanted to have a practice that treated patients the way they would want to be treated at the dentist. And of course, that included same-day emergency dentist appointments.
Additionally, they have a standard that includes completing the treatment needed, whenever possible, on that same first day of service. Customarily, an emergency patient might be examined and sent home with some medication and scheduled to return later for the work needed.
At Bright Side Dental, an emergency patient is scheduled to come into the office the day they call in, if that is at all possible. When they arrive at the office they are examined, the source of the problem is discovered and treatment is administered.
In most cases, the needed work is completed on the day of the first appointment. The doctors did not want people to have to leave and come back, which could unnecessarily interrupt work or other important activities in their lives. The patient is there, the doctor is there, why not just complete the needed work?
Because in a slow economy patients may be more likely to defer dental care, this consequently can lead to an increase in the number of dental emergencies. One of the dentists commented that he has noticed more patients delaying dental care or opting for less expensive treatment.
Recent research has discovered that there are health problems linked to bad oral health habits. For example, advanced stages of gum disease, called periodontitis, have been associated with health problems such as stroke and heart disease. Additionally, researchers have linked periodontitis to low birth weight, premature birth, pancreatic cancer, high blood sugar levels and even bacterial pneumonia.
